Abstract

Purpose

Set in a Mexican-American community of a US Gulf Coast state, the purpose of this paper was to describe how three young siblings and their family members constructed their spiritual, ethnic and communicative identities within the context of a virtual family literacy program during COVID-19.

Design/methodology/approach

This project was approached as an illustrative case study that focused on one family’s engagement with a children’s book in which the protagonists retell the legend of the Catholic patroness of the Americas, Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Findings

The case study illustrates how the children's spiritual/religious identities were inseparably intertwined with their home literacy practices and their identities as communicators with others. The children’s everyday spiritual/religious practices, routines and activities motivated familial conversations and dialogue that engage and support children’s literacy development.

Originality/value

Although there is a large corpus of scholarship about secular early literacy program for families with preschool children, there are few that describe the recognition and inclusion of families’ spiritual/religious identities.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to incorporate innovative technology (i.e. blockchain) into the design of an online travel agency (B-OTA). The authors accelerated the design of the prototype system through expert interviews to understand the convenience of the blockchain travel and accommodation platform for users. The authors further validated the prototype system design and improved reference capability through usability testing.

Design/methodology/approach

Rapid prototyping of B-OTA was carried out through the Delphi method and literature compilation. Design validation of usability testing was conducted using modified systematic evaluation methodology. Prototype system suggestions and improvements were collected through feedback from test subjects.

Findings

This study will be helpful for the development of B-OTAs and related technologies. Through usability testing, the authors verified that creating a familiar operating environment for users can reduce users’ fear of unfamiliar technology. The results of this research provide future B-OTA researchers and practitioners with design guidelines.

Originality/value

Beyond the blockchain-related technologies used, few studies have reported experiences and interface design of B-OTAs. This study states that, as many human–computer interaction-related papers have pointed out, the basic prerequisite for successful interface design is a clearer definition of users’ needs during operation. User experience and user interface design should provide a good user experience.

Abstract

Purpose

In this process the electrical contact is brought to the backside of a standard silicon wafer. The details of the entire process are disclosed, from the photolithography processes to the electrodepositing step, and a model for electrical contact was designed.

Design/methodology/approach

The localized Cu growth of high aspect ratio (AR) microstructures was obtained through an SU-8 photolithography by exploiting the optimal adhesion on the silicon surface and the possibility of generating thick layers with a single spun process

Findings

The experimental results showed an unexpected behaviour that is theoretically explained in detail considering the energy band theory. The obtained geometries showed a remarkable 6:1 AR without any adhesion problem. The non-invasive front-side manipulation represents a noteworthy improvement and simplification for the design of a multi-step production process.

Originality/value

An alternative technological approach, called back plate electroplating, has been carried out to obtain Cu growth on the front side of a standard n-type Si wafer through a back side electrical contact. This technique was then applied to fabricate a master for hot-embossing in a LIGA (Lithographie, Galvanoformung, Abformung)-like process flow. For this purpose, an SU-8 thick mask on a standard n-doped wafer was used. Finally, by using this process, it was possible to obtain high AR Cu geometries, avoiding any complex designing and patterning of the contacts on the front side and thus ensuring good adhesion of the SU-8.

Abstract

Purpose

To study the determinants and evolution of the trading activity in the Colombian Stock Market from 2007 to 2016.

Design/methodology/approach

ARMA time series models were used, including several explanatory variables recommended by previous literature.

Findings

We find that stock market activity can be predicted to a large extent by its lags, and that positive returns in the last three months, emissions and the VIX index are also explicative variables, as suggested by empirical studies in other countries and theoretical models of market microstructure. These results are robust by using alternative measures of trading activity, total number of trades and turnover.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this study is the analysis of the trading activity of the Colombian Stock Market, a critical variable for monitoring the development of any financial market.

Abstract

Objective

The purpose of this paper is to present the progress and trends of the literature on art as an investment and to outline potential research lines to be developed.

Design/methodology/approach

This work gathers, analyses and critically discusses the attributes of investments in art in general, and in Latin American art in particular.

Findings

Most studies report that art (art in general, and Latin American in particular) has offered relatively low but positive real returns, which have tended to be below those offered by stocks and similar to those realized by bonds. Art has a low correlation with other investments.

Research limitations and implications

The literature on the attributes of Latin American art as an investment is limited and new research would help to close the knowledge gap with respect to this segment of the art market as it continues to grow.

Practical implications

Similarly to the research carried out into other segments of the art market, studies on Latin American art suggest that the works of art are worth more, ceteris paribus: the more renowned the artist, the larger the work, whether they were executed in oil, and if they were auctioned at Sotheby’s or Christie’s. The paper also details a series of practical implications for those who participate in the art market.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first exhaustive review of the literature on the attributes of Latin American art as an investment. The findings of this study are useful for academics, art collectors, auction houses, gallerists and others who take part in the arts market.

Abstract

The emergence of social media as a corporate disclosure channel has caused significant changes in the production and dissemination of corporate information. This review identifies important themes in recent research on the impact of social media on the corporate information environment and provides suggestions for further explorations of this new but fast-growing area of research. Specifically, we first review the evolution of Internet-based corporate disclosure and related regulations, and then focus on three recent streams of research: 1) companies’ use of social media; 2) information produced by non-corporate users and its impact on capital markets; and 3) the credibility of corporate information on social media platforms.

Abstract

A phase‐change temperature‐based formulation including general latent heat effects is presented. These effects are taken into account by means of an explicit “phase‐change function” (or liquid fraction‐temperature relationship in a more specific context) defined analytically or based on experimental measurements. The behaviour of different functions is studied and compared. The finite element equations of this formulation are also described. Finally, a numerical example is analysed to illustrate the performance of the proposed methodology.
